Monitoring Coastal Erosion in West Africa

Geologist Alessio Rovere (left) and the University of Ghana’s Trinity Mensah-Senoo during fieldwork in Ghana, where they walked nearly 10 kilometers down a beach with a GPS to collect data that will be used to monitor coastal erosion. Rovere is an adjunct research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the leader of the Sea Level and Coastal Changes group at MARUM, University of Bremen. He uses field techniques and modeling approaches to understand past sea levels and climates, and as well as the sensitivity of different areas to coastal erosion, or to extreme wave events.
