Sediment Traps Antarctica

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory oceanographer Joaquim Goes recovers floating sediment traps during a research cruise in Antarctica’s Ross Sea. The traps collect debris falling through the water column, such as dead sea creatures, microscopic shells, dust and minerals. Analyses of these samples sheds light on ocean circulation, carbon, and minerals and nutrients in the ocean.

More recently, Goes has studied plankton blooms and the rapid ecosystem changes occurring in the Arabian Sea, which are disrupting the marine food chain and threatening the health of an ecosystem supporting a coastal population of nearly 120 million people. (Image: Wade Jeffrey)
